Saudi Arabia is making a bold entry into the global tourism scene with the Red Sea Project an ambitious development set to transform its untouched western coastline into a world-class luxury destination. This large-scale initiative is turning a chain of pristine islands into exclusive resorts, offering a fresh take on high-end travel.
A Vision Rooted in Sustainability
Introduced in 2017 under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan, the Red Sea Project is designed to reduce the country’s reliance on oil by promoting tourism. Spanning roughly 28,000 square kilometers, the development includes more than 90 islands, along with desert and mountainous landscapes.
A defining feature of the project is its focus on regenerative tourism. Instead of simply preserving nature, the aim is to actively improve it. Nearly all of the land about 99% will remain untouched, protecting delicate ecosystems such as coral reefs and wildlife habitats.
Ultra-Luxury Island Resorts
At the core of the project are its luxury resorts, created to compete with top-tier destinations like the Maldives and Seychelles.
One of the main highlights is Shura Island, which will host 11 premium resorts alongside marinas, leisure facilities, and a golf course. Notable hotels include:

Unlike crowded tourist hubs, the Red Sea Project emphasizes exclusivity. Visitor numbers will be limited to about one million annually, ensuring a peaceful and private experience while reducing environmental impact.
