Norway features a remarkable dining destination where guests can eat beneath the ocean’s surface. This partially submerged restaurant allows visitors to enjoy meals while observing marine life through a large panoramic window.
Location and Design
The restaurant, called Under, is located in Lindesnes on Norway’s southern coastline. Part of the building is positioned about 5 metres below sea level, with a massive glass wall facing the seabed.
Its structure is firmly anchored to withstand strong waves and harsh coastal weather.
What Makes It Unique
This restaurant stands out because it combines nature, architecture, and fine dining:
- Diners sit underwater with direct views of the ocean environment
- The glass window functions like a natural aquarium filled with wild sea life
- Fish, sea plants, and changing marine conditions can be seen in real time
- The building is designed to gradually integrate with the surrounding marine ecosystem
The Dining Experience
Guests are served a carefully prepared tasting menu that highlights local and seasonal ingredients, especially seafood. The underwater setting creates a calm and ever changing atmosphere shaped by the ocean outside.
Purpose Behind the Concept
The project was developed not only as a luxury attraction but also to:
- Showcase Norway’s rich marine environment
- Promote eco-friendly and sustainable design
- Increase awareness of ocean conservation
Under offers a rare experience where dining meets the deep sea. Sitting 5 metres below the ocean, visitors enjoy both exceptional cuisine and a close connection to underwater life.
