The Shoes She Never Wore

Ngozi had a pair of red heels sitting in her wardrobe for over a year. They were beautiful—shiny, bold, and elegant. But every time she thought about wearing them, she hesitated. “They’re too bright,” she’d tell herself. “People will stare.” So instead, she stuck to her usual black flats.

One evening, she was invited to her cousin’s engagement party. She looked at her dresses, then her shoes, and her eyes landed on those red heels again. This time, something in her whispered, “Why not?”

She slipped them on and looked at her reflection. For the first time in a long while, she didn’t just see herself—she saw a stronger version of herself. At the party, she walked in and instantly felt heads turn. Not because of the shoes, but because of the confidence they gave her.

People complimented her, not just on her outfit, but on how radiant she looked. She laughed more, spoke louder, and felt freer. That night, Ngozi realized the red heels had never really been about fashion. They were about courage—the courage to step into her own spotlight.

When she got home, she placed the shoes back on the rack, but this time with a smile. She promised herself: No more hiding. From today, I’ll wear my red heels proudly.
